When it comes to health trends, alkaline water is increasingly gaining recognition. But what exactly is alkaline water and what can it do to help you feeling amazing? Keep reading to find out.
Acid vs Alkaline
If you remember back to high school chemistry, we’re taught two basic terms – acidity and alkalinity. These terms are used to describe where a substance sits on the pH scale. pH stands for Potential of Hydrogen and is a scale that ranges from 0-14. Basically, any substance with a pH under 7 is considered to be acidic, over 7 is considered to be alkaline and 7 is neutral. Hence, alkaline water is water is used to describe water with a pH over 7.
As you can see on the chart to your right, it’s important to note that a difference of one point in pH equals a ten fold difference. So for example a water with a pH of 6 is a hundred times more acidic than a water with a pH of 8!
What Can Alkaline Water Do for Me?
The chances are, your daily diet consists of a lot of sugars (many hidden in food) and processed foods. These foods aren’t ideal for your body and create an acid build up which the body needs to eliminate to get your body’s natural pH levels back in balance. If this doesn’t happen the acid build up leads to fatigue, a weakened immune system and will eventually cause illnesses. Incorporating alkaline water into your diet will help to neutralise the acidic waste in your body and help flush it out safely. Many people have reported being cured of various ailments due to consumption of alkaline water, while others have reported higher energy levels, a calmer mood and better ability to focus.
Some of the benefits of alkaline water include:
- Boosts your metabolism and energy levels.
- Reduces acidity in your bloodstream so your alkaline reserves (mainly calcium) don’t need to be stolen from your bones and cells.
- Alkaline waters have an anti-oxidant effect that’s best explained by Ray Kurzweil, author of Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough To Live Forever: “The negative ions in alkaline water are a rich source of electrons that can be donated to free radicals in the body, neutralising them and stopping them from damaging healthy tissues.
- Help develop an environment where diseases cannot survive. Dr Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for his discovery that “if our internal environment is changed from an acidic, oxygen deprived environment to an alkaline environment full of oxygen, viruses, bacteria and fungus cannot live.”
How Do I Get Started on the Right Path?
As with everything, you need to take a holistic approach. But the easiest step to take is to replace your drinking water with a natural alkaline water. You need to drink water every day right? Switching to an alkaline water can help flush out toxins while an ordinary water may not have the same effect.
